Study: Pretty wives treated better by husbands

Ok, I just read a news story about the results of a scientific study, and it just really pissed me off.

The gist: Beautiful women are more likely to be worshipped by their husbands. I am not making this stuff up - it’s what the study said! Oh, and less attractive men make more attentive husbands than hot men. People were actually paid to study this?

Yes, apparently, and the results were published in the Journal of Family Psychology.

The study revealed that less-attractive men with more-attractive wives are more likely to respond to the problems of wives by saying: “Hey, I’m here for you; what do you want me to do? How can I help you?” the study’s author said.

If the woman is not as hot, or the man is good looking, his response is more likely to be something like: “This is your problem, you deal with it.”

Why do hot men make crappy husbands? Apparently because they look at their wives and think they can do better. But the less attractive men are just happy to have the arm candy. The study’s author again: “The husband who’s less physically attractive than his wife is getting something more than maybe he can expect to get. He’s getting something better than he’s providing at that level. So he’s going to work hard to maintain that relationship.”

So what do other scholars think of this study? The Associated Press asked an MIT professor (who was not involved in the study) what his thoughts were. And this is his quote (again, I am NOT making this stuff up): “[It] seems very reasonable. Men are very sensitive to women’s attractiveness. Women seem to be sensitive to men’s height and salary.” I have never met this professor, but I’m betting he is short and underpaid.
