I haven’t had time to think up a post-vacay playlist, so I again set my iPod to random and had it select songs for me. And I must say, they are awesome. I totally saved them and will listen to them. Good job, my little electronic buddy!
Cum On Feel The Noize, Quiet Riot. So sad that singer Kevin DuBrow OD’d last year. But the awesomeness of this song, and all my 5th grade memories attached to it, lives on. Girls rock your boys!
Waiting for Tonight, Jennifer Lopez. I liked her first album. Don’t front - you did too. I know you know the words to If You Had My Love. And you thought that Out of Sight was a good film. She didn’t get annoying until after the turn of the millennium.
Everything She Wants, Wham! OMG, this reminds me of the height of my crush on Andrew Ridgeley. He was sooo cute. And did you know he went on to marry Siobhan from Bananarama?!?! That makes them 80s royalty.
Eleanor Rigby, Aretha Franklin. One of the coolest Beatles covers, ever!
I Just Wanna Stop, Gino Vannelli. Oh, my goodness. I LOVE Gino. My mom and sister used to play his records all the time when I was a kid. I found his greatest hits in a used CD store in Boston years ago and it was like finding an old friend.
Electric Avenue, Eddy Grant. Ok, I just closed my office door because I must dance to this. “We gonna rock on to Electric Avenue, and then we’ll take it higher! Oh no!”
Peg, Steely Dan. OMG, I replayed this song about 7 times when it came on. I usually talk about how my mom influenced my musical taste, but this one’s all about my dad. He used to listen to this neo-Jazz station when I was a kid, introducing me to artists like Earl Klugh, Michael Franks, Pat Metheny, and Steely Dan - one of my favorite bands today. This song was a favorite on the station. He would turn it up when it came on during car rides, and I’ve loved it ever since.
Killing Me Softly With His Song, Roberta Flack. Ok, I’ve already told you the vocalists whose voices I’d love to steal. If I could pilfer songwriting abilities, Roberta would be my mark.
Comedown, Bush. Ooh, this reminds me of the good part of law school: first year, before I got all beaten down and jaded, when Boston seemed like this awesome cool new place and I was meeting cool people who would become my friends for life. Oh, and did I mention that Gavin Rossdale is hot?
Living for the City, Stevie Wonder. This one’s for you, Tim!
Brick House, The Commodores. This song should be in some hall of fame. Is it in the Library of Congress’ collection of American Treasures? If not it should be. And it makes me want an afro. (Who knew Lionel Richie played saxophone?!)
uh, Andrew Ridgeley’s long time lady friend (don’t think they are married) is Keren Woodard, from Bananarama, NOT Siobhan.
Really? So much for my full grasp of 80s trivia. They’re still 80s royalty, tho.
